Supported Browsers

Our MessageBoard software is designed to work with the following browsers:

• Internet Explorer 5.5+
• Netscape 7+
• Mozilla
• Safari
• Opera 7+

If you are not using one of these browser versions, you may experience severe usability problems. Please upgrade your browser to a newer version for optimal performance.

Terms of Service

You must agree to the Terms of Service in order to use the Quinlan Road Community MessageBoard. Any time the Terms of Service is modified and updated, each MessageBoard member will be required to accept the new Terms of Service before being allowed to use the MessageBoard.

Navigating and Reading

There are two main ways to navigate through the Quinlan Road Community MessageBoard environment.

On the top and bottom of all pages is a "breadcrumb" line. These links show where in the MessageBoard you are reading and give you the option to click up or down the structure of the MessageBoard. Within each breadcrumb line are also icons to open up options within each level of the site. Each icon will open up direct links to tools like search or other forums and categories within the MessageBoard application.

A second navigation tool is the "Go" button built into the top left side of each page.

Use the "Go" button to navigate directly to My Space, Forums or Chat (if enabled).

Why Should I Register a Username?

By registering a Username, you will be able to edit your profile and preferences. You will get the most out of your time here if you change your profile to suit your individual tastes. There are a lot of options in your profile to make your experience here more enjoyable, so please take a few moments to try the various settings.

Login/Logout

Every page displays a link to login and logout
If you are not logged in it will say: "You are not logged in. Login or register"

When you log in, please type in your email address and password.
If you have lost your password, you can have it sent to your email address by clicking the link on the login page called "Lost Password?" Your password is case sensitive.

Why Reigster
Many features of the site require a login to view. As well, you will be able to save personal preferences when you are logged in.

Remember Me
Select this option if you wish to save a cookie on your computer to keep you logged in automatically to the Quinlan Road Community MessageBoard.

Logout
Clicking the logout link will log you out of the site and clear the "Remember Me" cookie if selected.

Once you have entered your username and password, you'll be brought to the Start Page. You can now enter the main forum area by clicking the Main Index link at the top of the page. This will list all of the forums on the Quinlan Road Community MessageBoard.

Viewing Your Profile – You must be logged in.

Clicking the GO / My Space / Profile link will show your Public Profile. This is the information other members of the community may see about you.

In order to view and edit your "Private Profile," click the "Edit Profile" link. Your site administrator determines what fields are required and what fields are optional. Required fields are marked with an asterisk and you may not submit your profile unless these fields are filled in.

Why Was I Sent to My Profile Without Asking?

This means there are new terms of service posted by the administrator or a new profile field required by the Quinlan Road Community MessageBoard. You will need to complete your profile before proceeding to regular MessageBoard pages.

How Do I Change My Password?

First, you must be logged in

Click on GO / My Space / Profile link will show your Public Profile. Click “View Edit Complete Profile”. Check off “Change Account Password”. This is where you can change your password. Remember to confirm your password change. Scroll down and click “Submit”. Your password is now changed.

An email will be sent to your account notifying you of your password change.

I Forgot My Password!

If you have forgotten your password, don't worry! You can very easily have your password emailed to you. All you need to do is go to the login page, click the button marked “I forgot my password”, type in your email address and your password will be emailed to the email address of the username you have registered with us.

This process is safe because the password is only emailed to the original owner of the account. There is no way for anyone else to steal your password by using this feature.

Help! I'm Having Trouble Logging In

This checklist may help you log in successfully:

1) Make sure you are entering your password correctly. Passwords are “Case sensitive”.
2) Ensure that your browser supports cookies; if so, check the security level you are using. High levels of security restriction in certain browsers will automatically reject cookies. In order to use the key features of the Quinlan Road Community MessageBoard, you'll need to accept cookies.
3) Log out completely by hitting the Logout link on the page, and then log back in again.
4) After logging in, you may have to hit the reload/refresh button on your web browser to expedite the authentication.
5) If these steps don't work, you can try purging your cookies from this site using the My Cookies tool.
6) If you continue to have problems, go to the login page. Enter your Username in the Username field and click the "I forgot my password" button. Your password will be generated and emailed to the email address used for the account setup. You must enter a Username in the Username field before you use this feature.

How to Post Topics and Replies

To post a new topic, click the "New" tab on the top left of any forum page. You will be asked to choose a new Discussion, Poll, Private Message or Photo Album (if enabled by the Board administrator). Click one of these options to begin.

• A discussion is a topic with replies
• A poll invites people to vote on a question and add replies
• A private message is a discussion where only those invited may see it and participate (if enabled by the Board administrator)
• A photo album is a gallery of uploaded images with a place to add comments as required (feature not enabled at this time).

To post a reply, look for a "Reply" tab at the top or bottom of any discussion or poll. Click this tab to open a posting window with tools for enhancing your post with bold text, images or attachments (uploading of images and/or attachments not enabled at this time).

Beside each "Reply" tab is a yellow arrow for "Quick Reply." The "Quick Reply" is for fast text-only responses to a discussion.

Users may edit their own posts. View “Enhancing or Editing a Post section”.

What If I Post In The Wrong Forum?

Let the Forum Administrator know - he/she will be able to move it for you.

Can I Run My Own Forum in the Quinlan Road Community MessageBoard?

Unfortunately no.

Is There a Spell Checker?

No. If you want to be sure that you're word perfect, you'll have to spell-check your post in another application, such as Word, and then cut and paste it into the Forums edit box.

Is There A Limit To Signature Image Size? - Feature not enabled at this time

We ask that you keep your images relatively small. As a rule, please do not exceed 125 x 600 pixels and/or 35k for a signature image. This will ensure that the forums load quickly for all users.

Can I Attach A File To My Post?

Not at this time.

How Do I Post a Poll?

Putting a poll in your post is simple, but remember: Posts with polls cannot be edited but they may be deleted.
Click on “New’ the select “Poll”.

You can enhance a post when first creating it or when editing it.

Choose a "mood" icon for the discussion by clicking the selector beside the "Subject" or "Reply To:" field.

You may insert a "graemlin" emoticon into your posts by clicking the emoticon icon on the left side of the posting tools.

The posting page tools include some or all of these options:

• Graemlins - an inline emoticon image
• URL - a web page link
• Bold - bold text Italics - italic text
• Quote - indented text
• List bullet - ordered text
• Email - a clickable email address
• Image - a properly formed link to an web image
• Attachment - where enabled, an uploaded file attachment

How Do I Find Posts That May Already Have The Answer To The Question I Have?

One of the key benefits of the QR Community MessageBoard format is that it enables commonly asked questions to be answered once for the benefit of all. Before posting your question, it is always worth checking to see if it has already been asked - and answered! You can do this via the Find link on the Menu bar. Various options are available, both for how the search term is specified and for controlling how much of the Forums database you want to search. This is where the specificity of thread subjects is important, making it much easier to locate precisely what it is you're after from a list of search results.

Favorites and Notifications

Favourites
To add a discussion to your favourites list, click the "Tools" tab button and select "Add to favourites." You can keep a list of up to 30 discussions in your My Space page. Icons there will show whether your favorites have been updated since your last visit.

Notifications
Click on the Go, then My Space tab and then click Notifications. Here you can change delivery options or cancel the notifications request entirely. You can also edit your preferences directly from the email you receive. Delivery options may include:

Daily Email Digest - a summary of all notifications sent once a day.
Weekly Email Digest - a summary of all notifications sent once a week.
Immediate Notification - email automatically sent when there is an update.
Modify or Cancel a Notification

Buddies

To view your Buddies: Go, My Space, "Buddies" and search for other members by name.

Permissions

The permissions browser shows what you may and may not do within your community.

Click each section to expand the permission descriptions. A check mark shows that you have permission. No check mark means that you do not have the permission.

Private Messaging – Feature Not Enabled at this Time

If enabled, Private Messaging topics are discussions where those invited may view and participate.

You may join an existing Private Messaging discussion by clicking on the title. You may start a new Private Messaging discussion by clicking the "New Private Message" button. Use your Buddies list to choose other members to invite.

Karma

This is a rating of your performance and reputation in the community. It normally is based on participation in the community but may be edited by the administrator.

Posting Enhancements

To Chat Privately With Another Member – Feature Not Enabled at this Time

1. Click on the name of the person you want to chat privately with.
2. In the pop up window that appears, click the Private button.
3. This will invite them to the private chat and open a separate chat window for your discussion.

To Add a Graemlin to Your Text:

1. To add a Graemlin to your text, you can click on the Graemlin located in the bottom left of Chat Message window to display the list.
2. Click on the Graemlin you want to add to your text, it will add the character equivalent and when you click Talk, it will be displayed as the image Graemlin in the conversation box.

To Ignore a Member

1. To ignore another member (so that the Quinlan Road Community MessageBoard will not show you any posts by the person being ignored); click on the name of the person you want to ignore.
2. In the pop up window that appears, click the Ignore button.
3. You will see a message indicating that the person you specified is now being ignored (The person being ignored receives no notification of this and nobody else can see the message indicating that you are ignoring someone).

To Use an Emote:

1. To view a list of the emotes available, type /emotes and click Talk.
2. Once you know the emote you will use, type the emote characters (the '/' followed by a word) and click Talk.

*Emotes are sort of like shorthand for messages you want to say to the group. An example of an emote is /bye which will be displayed in the discussion box as 'your name waves goodbye to everybody' (where 'your name would be replaced with your username).

Moderated Chats

1. In some situations, an administrator may configure a chat room to be read-only or for its messages to be screened before appearing live.
2. If your chat posting requires approval, you will be informed that your post is being moderated.
