Greetings! I am new to this commmunity and I hope to meet new friends here and hopefully join in on discussions regarding Miss McKennitt and her "magical", beautiful music. I was introduced to her music through a close friend about three years ago...and have collected almost all of her albums since. It is a goal of mine to go to a performance and experience the music "live". I understand that it is incredible. I'm hoping that THIS experience can be rewarding as well.
Thank you GuitarPat, Julianne and DustyRose. I hope to enjoy some good conversation (when I have the time!) here.
Julianne, I am a teacher as well. I teach a Grade 3/4 split. I play Miss McKennitt's music in my class during art and also as a stimulus for creative writing. It was interesting to watch the kids' reactions. Not to be sexist, but the girls took to the music immediately, while the boys (because it was Miss McKennitt) promptly labelled it "girly" music! We had a discussion about why they felt that way. It turns out that most of the boys were following the lead of one of the more forceful members of my class. They, in fact, liked the music very much. It also turned out that this "leader" also liked the music, but just didn't want the other boys to think he liked "girly" music. To make a long story short, we had a discussion about being open to all types of music...and really LISTENING to the music, words and feelings evoked. We also discussed the history presented in Miss McKennitt's music.
Most of you will understand that, sometimes, music calls to you....touches you in ways that are hard to describe. Miss McKennitt's music does that to me. It evokes emotional responses in me that I often have trouble controlling. When I first heard Miss McKennitt's music it was overwhelming. I can't say that very many artists have had that effect on me. In any event, I am looking forward to finding out when Miss McKennitt's next, more local, performance will be. I fully intend to make it there.
Once in qwhile, I find the opportunity to go to this website...and usually learn something. Welcome, because it is great to hear such uplifting and thought-provoking ideas.
My question to everyone, is: For 2008's New Year Resolution, what will everyone decide to do for the better in their life?
Mine, is to see the positive more often than naught and to play some of Loreena's music in the classroom whilst my students are writing, sketching or creating graphic organizers. Her music evokes much imagination as I am sure we all well know.
Welcome to the community. You've come to the correct place. Lot's to hear about here. Advanced e-mails about ticket sales that get you right in the front couple rows. I met her back in April in Boston, and got tickets for row two in Portland in October. Keep your fingers crossed for a tour in 08.
