I would like to introduce myself. Im Alexandra From Buenos Aires Argentina. Im 23 years old and I listen Loreena`s music since I was 12. I like all sort of music, greek (because of my roots), classical music, celtic etc.. in fact Im very open when it comes to music, I just think that music can be defined as: the way we feel, at a certain moment and with a determinied person, or only you. I wrote before but long ago. I know many people join every day and what I like most from Loreena`s different web site forums is to listen to the other fans stories, music they like and how did you feel when they listened to Loreena but not from a cd, LIVE! Anyway... I would just love to hear from all of you.
Luckily I got to know Her music because of my best friend who is an harpist and made me listen to Marco Polo, as she thought it had greek influences the song itself. From that moment on, Loreena Mc Kennitt has another fan around the world.
And yes! I am a big fan from this amazing singer. The only thing I want is to see her performing here in Buenos Aires, anyway.. I cant wait for that moment to come.
My very favorite songs.. well.. all! but Bonny Swan, All souls nigh, Penelope's Song, Night Ride across the Caucasus...
Looking to hear from you and to see some day (soon ) the date of a tour in South America
My best.

Wow! I had so much fun when I read the thing of the ring.. my father lost it too during his honeymoon, but not in the sand, while he was swimming.. now it must be somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean... Yes, you definately have to go back! With the metal detector of course
Talking about Roy Orbison, I find so much happiness on his songs, he put his heart while singing... Pretty woman (film I never watched completly, Im more into old movies such as Gone With The Wind, Casablanca, etc) is a very famous song but my very favourite is ¨You Got it¨... he is so enthusiastic on that song; sounds like a man in love. I also enjoy listening to The Platters, Gospel music, and Classical because of my mother.

Yes, Hawaii was wonderful! However, I did lose my wedding ring in the sands of Waikiki beach. It's probably still there. Someday I may return with a metal detector and look for it! I also had to save my wife from drowning. Probably the last time we'll try snorkeling! But we did ride next to dolphins, walked up to hot lava, and watched the sun rise over Haleakala, another extinct volcano on Maui.
Yes, I know Roy Orbison,he was famous in my youth. Probably best known for Oh Pretty Woman, which was used later in the Julia Roberts film. And George Michael, yes, I must admit I did like that song by Wham! Another 80s group was Big Country. I loved their song In A Big Country, it had such an optimistic fighting spirit, I couldn't help but be picked up by it.

By the way, do you like Roy Orbison? He`s songs have so much passion.. I listen to his hit: ¨You got it¨, in some way says things which are very true... cos in the end, everything you want, you got it. Its a possitive song.

Alexandra;
If you love Roy Orbison, you should check out The Travelling Wilburys -- Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty (Lefty Wilbury, Nelson Wilbury, Lucky Wilbury, Otis Wilbury and Charlie T. Jr.). Amazon.com has CDs available, according to their website. Thy Wilbury be done!

Steven Demetre Georgiou, otherwise known as Cat stevens -- now Yusuf Islam -- never really stopped recording. When he decided to fully embrace Islam, he did stop recording "Top Forty" songs...but he continued to record for charitable events and to help teach about Islam, as well as a couple of children's albums. True, he has done only four albums since he left the "Pop scene" back in the late 1970's/early 1980's, but he never truly turned his back on the recording/music industry.
I summarized this from the liner notes of "The very Best of Cat Stevens", released in the year 2000.

Yes I do love stars and why not considering the fact of going to Hawaii some day. Im sure it must have been something really special to you, not only for the observatories but wonderful beaches with transparent water.

The other day talking about Greek famous singers, I rembered another one! George Michael! he`s real name is Giorgos Kyriakos.. I noticed aboutthis not long ago, but on a greek-aussie web site.. he had his hits too.. ¨wake me up before you go-go¨.. its very funny..

Hey Alexandra, if you really like looking at stars, then one of the best experiences is going to Mauna Kea on the big island of Hawaii. There's a number of observatories on the extinct volcano and there are nightly tours up there to show why those observatories are located there. You can see more stars than you ever knew existed. I was there on my honeymoon.

I have to thank you for the wonderful message you sent me.
About the name, thanks again!
I guess the fact of Loreena coming to Argentina is something that will happen soon, because the same reason she never came here its also the thing that can push her to come.. however, going to Salt Lake is a good idea! I was told its a beautiful place.
Yes, Ive been a fan of Loreena in the mid 90`s too. Caravansarai is great but from the her last cd, my very fav is Penelope`s Song. And If you would like to learn to play harp, dont hesitate and do it! I always wanted to learn how to play violin, and never had the time for it, something I regret... my family is very ¨musical¨, as my mother plays piano, my father whenever he finds some spare time, the bass and electrical guitar, my cousin is a concertist, You see.. music everywhere!
Very true that thing you say about age, when I see parents yelling or complaining at their kids this fact makes them look old.. on the other hand, I do recognise they have to settle limits and they can also be tired and they dont really mean it.. maybe one day when I have my own kids I will understand.
So as far as I can see... all the people here love animals!!! Wonderful! Do you have any pet? The last pet I had was a wonderful bunny, I called him Ernest (because of Heminway) but he died and I dont know whether if to buy a new one or not.. I also like owls I mentioned this to Dan, who also wanted to be a vet.
Its nice to meet you too! Have a nice day!
See you!

I just want to say I love your name. Very nice. Anyway, I was reading through all the posts and thought I would stop by and say Hello and get in on the conversation.
That would be very nice if she could travel to Argentina for a show, but if she couldn't make it, you could always try your family from Salt Lake City (I'm from there too) and have a reunion and all go to her concert. I bet it would be the most awesome experience.
I have been a fan of Loreena's since the mid 90's and love all of her songs. Of course I do enjoy some more then others, but currently my most favorite song is Caravansarai. I just love it! I would also love to learn to play the Harp, as well as learn my keyboard that I have. The Harp is just a very beautiful insturment.
Let's see...Oh yeah! lets talk about AGE. I too believe it is just a number and you are only as old as you make yourself to be. I always used to tell my Father that, because I think he started complaining he was too old when he was in his 40's. Once you start believing you are old, your youth just starts melting away. I am a very young 30 something and love it!
Also, I too wanted to be a vet when growing up. I love animals and I had some kind of specially thing going on with animals when I was younger, but the road I have traveled has led me down another path. I am planning on going to school for Massage Thereopy in Sept. and can only wait for the day I can work for myself!
As for taveling to distant places, my heart lies in Ireland and hope to someday go visit that beautiful country. Also I would like to go on a cruise to Alaska. I would be happy if I was able to see these two places, but there are other places I would love to travel too as well.
Not sure if I covered everything, but nice to meet you and hope to chat with you often. Blessings, Emeraldmoon

Yes I knew it and saw them too. Actually if you ever you go to Greece (you must!) at those places the ones they sell stuff for tourists its full of ceramic owls, you know the meaning of owls? Wisdom.

About owls, I didnt know that thing of the clacking noise. With these sort of animals, you never know how they will react and what they really mean with their attitude.
Astronomy has always been something interesting to me... how nice to have your sister and ask her everything you want... in this case Im lucky too as my father has always been a lover of this issue and Im starting to think he is a sort of encyclopidia... When I was in Europe and stared at the moon and sky, I remembered myself calling home and asking my father: How does the sky look over there? yes! Im fanatic till that point.. I can stay hours looking at the sky and the scenary is much more attractive if you are on the beach and you can hear the noise of the sea.. and the full moon whose silver light is reflected on the water.
And yes! Greece is paradise.. the history, the monuments, happy people everywhere, the food, the music.. its to have a wonderful and unforgettable time. Now I want to go to Russia (Red Square)and Egypt, another thing to do! I want to go to all the museums and meet the incredible Dr. Zahi Hawass.. he`s practically at all the documentals made by Nat Geo and Discovery.
The movie.. too bloody.. I didnt like it that much. It was just the main actor that made it interesting. Of course I cant deny the effects etc.. but too much blood for me. Cat Stevens, no, I dont know him. But there are many famous greeks for example: Alex Kapranos (saw his performance live last year) the singer of the band Franz Ferdinand...
Take care,
Alexandra The greek Goddess

Alexandra, Regarding astronomy, I know a little bit about it, as my sister has a career in the planetarium field. So I can find my way around the night sky, at least in the northern hemisphere. I've never been south of the equator and I would probably find it strange to look up and see a totally different set of stars!
Regarding owls, did you know they can make a clacking noise with their beaks? Everytime I opened the door to the owl ward, they'd start clacking. Not sure if that was warning or if they were glad someone was going to feed them.
Regarding Greece, it's always been on my list of places to go to. Always been fascinated with ancient history, in fact I have quite a nice collection of ancient Greek coins. Did you know the ancient Athenians used a owl motif for their coins? Went to see the movie "300" the other week. Kind of violent, but artistically done. Oddly enough, my alma mater's mascot is the Spartans.
Ever listen to Cat Stevens? He was a big favorite of mine in the old days. I know he's at least half-Greek, maybe more.

Practical girl? Lol. Well.. I guess the Accountancy runs in the family. But I always considered university... I was between Law and the one Im now into... however never rejected the attraction I have towards astronomy, I guess Its my father's fault, Stephen Hawkins and Isaac Asimov videos and books all over the house..
Thank you for all the things you say regarding owls, I know understand my mother saying to me: no way you are going to have such a creature at home... the fact is that want to have one...
The music you mention is great, talking about Bruce, my very favorite songs are: Man`s Job, I wish I was blind, Sad eyes, 57 channels and nothing on, Lucky Town, Atlantic City, Devils and dust, Empty Sky, You are missing, Worlds appart... all!!!!!!!!! I want to see him live! I think I didnt mention this before but Im crazy about the 80's music (Mike Oldfield, Foreigner, Blondie, Adams, Bon Jovi,Police etc) . I wish I had the age I do in that decade, the hair revolution Rolling Stones been here some months ago but always so messy their performance as fans are completly thrilled and carried away..
I also listen to Greek music... Im a huge fan, but that has to do with my roots. Been in Greece twice and had such a blast.
Warm regards,
Alexandra The Greek Goddess

Alexandra, You're right, age is all in the mind. I think my basic personality was in place by the time I was 25 and I just feel like I've stayed there ever since. I've just been lucky enough to retain the same facial features and hair (the back and muscles are another story).
So you're going to be an accountant? The first girl I ever fell heads over heels for became one. A very practical girl.
Oh yes, how could I leave out Bruce Springsteen? I love his stuff especially Born to Run, Dancing in the Dark, I'm on Fire, and Pink Cadillac. I wanted to go see him back in my college days (this would've been about 1978) but the line for tickets was huge. Wish I had tried anyway. Oh well, I'm sure he'll have another tour someday, I don't think he's retiring soon. Might as well mention some of those older artists I listened to: Bananarama, Bangles,Beatles,Pat Benatar, B-52s, Blondie, Kate Bush, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Electric Light Orchestra, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Fleetwood Mac, Heart, Hooters, Jefferson Airplane, Elton John, Pretenders, Renaissance, Rolling Stones,Linda Ronstadt, Al Stewart, 10,000 Maniacs.
Yeah, I was in vet school, but the studies were overwhelming, so I left. Learned a lot, though. I did get to work with some owls we were rehabiltating. You have to wear very thick leather gloves, otherwise their massive talons would dig right into you. But we'd have them on a tether, take 'em outside and toss them a piece of meat to dive down on.
Nice talking to you, gotta go.

Thanks for replying! Very interesting! Yes you are right almost impossible to pick one!
And yes you are right, very varied, but variety is also nice, you know I dont ¨marry¨ with any band, I just enjoy music and listen to what i want, and responding also to the way I feel, for example, If I want to relax, Loreena, would be perfect.
Keep well,

Its nice to hear from you. I have relatives in the USA, actually, in Salt Lake City.
Regarding age, as I always say, its a state of mind, its the way you feel about life.. and you sound very young and fresh by the way.
So you almost became a veterinarian? It means you like animals a lot. I dont have a pet now, but we had rabbits, birds, dogs, of course not all together! but years ago. Im a big fan of owls and rabbitts. About me I can say that I’m almost near to finish my studies, I will be an Accountant, so Im more into numbers, law, taxes and economics.
When you talk about Loreena`s songs I understand that the fact of saying: this is my favorite is not easy at all. I like the Bonny Swans too and found some similarities with the celtic poem: The Twa Sister or The Cruel Sister, which is actually awesome, if you want it I can send it to you.
My music likes are so varied too... U2 is great, I had the chance to see them live last year, regarding Michelle Branch, Brightman, Cranberries, are very nice as well.. but tell me, do you like ¨The Boss¨music? (I am talking about Mr. Bruce Springsteen he definately rocks!), without forgetting Bowie and Morrissey, Norah Jones, Jamie Cullum...

Well, Alexandra, I'm living in Michigan, one of the northern states of the USA (the one shaped like a mitten surrounded by the Great Lakes). I'm probably old enough to be your father, but I still look young enough to hang out with twenty-somethings. I'm married and we had a baby girl about a year ago. We also have a marvelously mischievious cat. I once almost became a veterinarian (like Loreena). I am now a registered nurse.
I like almost all of Loreena's songs, but if I had to pick my top ones, I'd say The Bonny Swans, The Lady of Shallot, The Mummer's Dance, Santiago, and The Mystic's Dream.
As for other music, it's pretty wide ranging. I guess my other top artist is Enya. It's often said if you like one, you'll like the other. They don't really sound that similar, but they are alike in that they produce wonderful music that's different from anything else out there. I also am keen on Blackmore's Night, they do original Renaissance style music with a rock flavor. Other artists I like are Adiemus, Tori Amos, Michelle Branch, Sarah Brightman, The Corrs, the Cranberries, Dead Can Dance, Madonna, Sarah McLachlan, Mediaeval Baebes, October Project, Rusted Root, U2, Hayley Westenra (who does a cover of The Mummer's Dance). There's also older artists who aren't really active anymore.

Heyla, Alexandra;
I like all of Loreena's songs -- it's just too dern hard to choose just one or two! If I absolutely had to choose, though...I would say The Mummer's Dance, Marco Polo, Night Ride Across The Caucasus, Bonny Portmore, The Old Ways, All Souls Night, Santiago, etc., etc. (Like I said, it's just too hard to choose!)
What else do I listen to? Well, right now, I am listening to Towards the Within, a live-recording CD by Dead Can Dance. I also listen to Hank Williams Sr., Jr. and the III (that's three generations of Hank Williams!); The Chieftains; David Allan Coe; Clannad; Waylon Jennings; Altan; Willie Nelson; Madeleine Peyroux; Squirrel Nut Zippers; Kaila Flexer & Third Ear; Maritza; Cat Stevens; Curtis & Loretta; Alan Stivell; Wendy Rule; Mannheim Steamroller; Ricky Skaggs; Rick Wakeman; Jack Gladstone; Johnny Cash; Dixie chicks; various artists who are truly "unknown" (they have recorded only for specific social groups, etc.); etc., etc. I have very eclectic tastes when it comes to music -- in fact, I have so many CDs and cassette tapes by so many artists of so many genres that I might be able to start up my own small part-time radio station! I draw the line at hip-hop, rap and thrash-metal, though, and anything of that sort. That stuff just is not music to my ears.

Well, a belated "welcome", anyway. If you really want for Loreena to do a South American tour, your best bet is to send a lot of e-mails to Quinlan Road. Who knows -- they might decide to do one next time around! Good luck to you all down there, and "Keep the faith", as it were.
