Er, hello. My age? I'm 29. I first heard a Loreena McKennitt song a long time ago when I was in high school (OK, not that long ago, maybe 12 years). I believe it was Prospero's Speech and it was on an episode of Due South (best mountie show ever). I always wondered who did that song.
Anyway, I never heard of Ms. McKennitt until November when I was in a car listening to CBC Radio (we live close enough to Windsor to pick up the signal) and they were playing her rendition of Tennyson's Lady of Shalott. Well, I must say, I was spell-bound. I also heard Penelope's Song and Never Ending Road a bit later.
I was very impressed by how she took old poetry and set it to music, so I checked out some of her other songs and found them very lovely and was also pleased to find it was she who did Prospero's Speech.
My current favorites are Prospero's Speech (spine tingling), Mummers' Dance (love the rhythm) and Lady of Shalott (gotta love Elaine and Lancelot).
I'm also impressed with how she has her own record label, which is something precious few singers can do. I think it's a shame how singers become chattel of record labels that control what kind of music they put out. Creativity has been completely lost in the pop music scene, hence my recent delving into Celtic music. There's still lots of creativity here, not to mention a link to something older than ourselves.
Well, I won't launch into a diatribe about the evils or prepackaged society and will just leave off here. Thanks for letting me join.
