Thinking of the Medditerrenean influences of "An ancient muse" i wondered: How many of you guys are familiar with Greek music?
I do love Greek music, traditional, laika, entehna (the last two always carefully chosen) and Loreena's music engagement with eastern melodies made me really happy...
Are you aware of any Greek artists or even poets/writers?
I bet you all know Mikis Theodorakis (who is one of Loreena's favourites too)...
Geia hara! (= health and hapiness to you)
P.S in Greek: Poly xairomai pou yparxoun atoma apo Ellada edw... Proseyxhtheite gia mia synaulia sto Lykavhto paidia!
My e-mail is annoula8919@yahoo.com, i'm waiting guys!

Didn't Vangelis do the soundtrack for the Alexander movie? (Which I didn't see, but heard the music).
Actually, now that you mention it, I think I have heard Greek pop once before... Hehe! Then again, I never listen to much pop--I'm very selective about it if I do listen to it.

Well talking about new age i think i would prefer our other artist Vangelis....

Well there's a lot i can suggest you.
Amongst the international artists, search for Evanthia Reboutsika, especially her soundtrack for the movie "A touch of spice" (or "Politiki kouzina" in Greek), which is pretty close to Loreena's approach of greek music from Smyrne, Konstantinoupoli (Instabul), that mix Greek and Turkish characteristics.
Mario Frangoulis' "Feggari erotevmeno" (live recording) is a good choice from his discography, as it includes some of the greatest Greek songs plus classic ones like Con te partiro, Granada, Ne me quitte pas, The phantom of the opera... And a surprise: Loreena's Marrakesh night market!!! Well, noone can sing it like her but it's worth listening. He sings it in duet with soprano Deborah Myers.
Haris' Alexiou older cds are very good too. (She has used Loreena's music -Tango to Evora- in a song too.)
I think you'll love anything you listen by Manos Chatzidakis or Mikis Theodorakis (two of the greatest greek composers ever). Thanos Mikroutsikos is also really good.
Stamatis Spanoudakis writes very beautiful instrumental music, something like Yanni, with the Greek influences being more obvious.
Reffering to traditional music i believe it will be a whole new music world for you, differing as you move from the islands to higher grounds of Greece... I personally vote for Cretan music.
If you can find anything in stores there or make any Greek friends, don't let it go...
P.S: Stay away from Greek pop. It sucks!
I'll come back for more...
Kisses, Anna

I have two favorite Greek music artists...the always wonderful Yanni (instrumental) and also the man with the heavenly voice, Mario Frangoulis. Mario is an exeptional talent, he sings in several languages including Greek. His voice is somewhat similar to Josh Groban's. I wish he were better known, his CDs are beautiful.

I can't speak a word of Greek, and I won't even try... But replying to Anna's first message here-- Is there anything you would suggest in particular? I love Greece and the Greek culture, but I haven't had the fortune of being exposed to much of its music.

Thanks!

Fedelma

The last time Loreena visited Greece (well i am not refering to vacations Smiler) was in 9 April of 2002 with the cause of the gold disk award for the sales of her last album Live in Paris and Toronto.

Here is a photo :

http://entertainment.webshots.com/photo/1036017576030020802dFcava

She sang with Haris Aleksiou The Tango to Nefeli (Tango to Evora arrangement) in main central point of Athens , Syntagma on 10 April 2002 among with Theodorakis, Farantouri, NTalaras , Arvanitaki .

Loreena also gave an interview to the Flash greek radio on 9 April. You can watch the live chat video of our angel here :

....

I am sure that Loreena will visit Greece again by the time she loves Greece so much and her new cd has so many greek elements...

PS : Giati paidia to Hrodeio sas xalaei ?? Smiler

Though I am Greek, I can't say I like Greek music apart from some particular songs. I only like nisiotika [music of the greek islands] a bit and rebetika.
