I couldn't pass by this topic without replying, but I'm at a friend's place, so I don't want them to pay too much for their internet because of me. I haven't checked my emails for a while, Malin, but I will tomorrow! Gina, the Norsemen didn't give a specific date, but even if they did, I don't think I'd want to know! thank goodness it's just mythology! Gotta go...will post a more detailed reply soon!...

Gina: now I see what you mean with putting yourself into characters. I was thinking more on a level of unexpressed feelings or dreams, or just a dream of being somewhere else, being someone else, in another time in another world.

I am reading Icelandic folktales right now, and suddenly everything about a certain character's past became so obvious! I recommend them, they are so straight forward, yet contain so much... I don't know.

Hi Nilam!!!
Stories takes on different venues to get on paper and I find most interesting what sparkes the images and characters and places and don't forget events that take place.
I can sit and write all day when an idea flits into my head as I listen to Loreena. Now my friend (huge LM fan)(bigger than me, I think, not sure how that can happen, it might be possible), and I are writing a collection of short stories of "The Tails of the Mormon and the Witch". She resembles a witch perfectly with her long silver streaked hair, her sensibilities and her black cat, you'd think she'd be the witch...nope to her. I call it "The Tails" because one of the stories (at least for now) will be from the view of the cat.

I wish all are well and happy putting up with all the cold, snow, wind, rain, and flooding,
Love,
Gina

Hi Malin,

I hope to get a nice Spring feeling around the end of March.

I love the smell of the air and seeing all the flowers blossom. I love waking up in the daylight and feeling the sun rays bringing everything back to life.

Can't wait, can't wait, can't wait... Smiler

Nagelfar, ja... and Fenris, was he not supposed to be released on that day? Along with Loke, chained to the rocks...I think it is very interesting too Big Grin

Oh, I get funny ideas all the time. And if it does not start with a sudden thought, it might start with a picture that I draw without really thinking. There are all these impressions coming all the time, from people (strangers that pass by, you catch a word, you see a glimpse, you know..), from beautiful things, from feelings, from dreams, from music.

Often when I start to write I have an idea of the ending, the storyline - at least roughly - but the way is always full of surprises. When I started writing on Stormbird's wings I was really writing on a story that has been somewhere in the back of my head for a long time but still refuses to step forward, four entirely different strangers in a contest, each with a special ability, and all of that...one of them was able to travel through mirrors. Then I just got this idea of a little strange girl almost burning a library down after seeing a demon in a mirror, and then it just kept going...
But I think it is hard to just write straight, or what to say, I write a lot of things down in different documents to tie it together later and fill in the gaps. I am too restless sometimes.

Jesse: hope you got my mail.

Gina: now I see what you mean with putting yourself into characters. I was thinking more on a level of unexpressed feelings or dreams, or just a dream of being somewhere else, being someone else, in another time in another world.

When you start writing - does it start with a little idea? Do you know the ending and "starts" from there? A concept?

Hi "Nilam" Wink
Thanx for the compliment on my maps...even though you haven't seen them yet!

in response to your other above quoted question; this particular idea (the story that I haven't written yet but have given a 7000-year history) started when I was reading a particular collection of myths and legends. part of this story will be loosely based on a legend concerning Charlemange, a legend concerning one of his paladins, a greek legend and the various confrontations that happen at Rangnarok (the "end of the world" according to Norse Mythology).

What about you? do your stories start with a little idea? and if so, what is it?

gotta go!

Hello Everybody!!!

I am ready to fly to Australia right now! It's been chilly and very windy here. Now the sun is shining, finally!!!

Jesse, you have got me intregued by this Rangnarok. When does the Norse say the world will end? I love mythology!

I wanted to share my favorite characters that wasn't Loreena induced, rather she was forged from the Wise Woman Tradition.

Name: The Old Hag of the Forest
Lives: Cave behind Zylophila
Hair: Silver and wild
Eyes: Dark
Skin: Wrinkly and yellowish
Age: Thousands of years old
Height: Just under 5'
Clothes: Tattered mutted grey dress and a gold shawl
She used a twisted walking stick and loves to tease. She's hunched over due to her Parkinson's Disease when she died. Her spirit lives in the cave and on Samhain she enters Cheyennes body and teaches her wisdom to the circle. When the circle opens up and all hears what they need to hear for the new year from her, she leaves Cheyenne exhausted who has to take the next day resting to regain her energy.

When I was forming the Highwayman's character, I thought of a different Zylophila story Annachie Gordon helped out a lot. It was a fun and troubled story for the characters of Bess and her Highwayman.

Happy Writing and Dreaming,
Gina

I love how you and Jesse have reached beyond this realm and create your own worlds. Does that make you feel more like a Goddess? That's an interesting thought! HahaIn some ways, I have more control over these characters then my life.
You have the power to control these new characters that you have given life to do your will? They become so living in the mind that it is kinda spooky. Jesse?
Yes, for me they are alive in my mind as well. And some times their emotions spill out of me during inappropiate places.
Or is it like a dance? How much of your own self do you put into your characters and stories? A whole lot..? Roll Eyes I take different personality traits from different people and create new characters.
Or is it Loreena induced?
My story was Loreena induced. I'd listen and images would pop in my mind and if I wanted my mind back (usually I didn't want it back) I would have to write down what was playing in my head.

I love that, it seems like we aren't that different after all! Big Grin I am a champion day dreamer (haha) and I love to listen to music that inspires me and makes new images and new idea come up in my mind. "The stormbird's wings" was born through Huron beltane firedance, for example... So I was listening to Parallel dreams, and just when I needed a name for the odd white-haired boy, "Annachie Gordon" was playing.
The thing with creating own worlds - it is fun to make up things, of course, plus no one can really say that you are wrong ^^ Sometimes I let stories take part in other worlds and sometimes in our world.

One of the new inspirational songs for the Winter tale is "Never-ending story", Limahl (I would be surprised if you had not heard the song, but if you haven't, check it out on youtube!) I am so happy that I am not stuck anymore! *tralalala*

Jesse: check out Tinypic.com ! You load up the image and get a link. Of course, the picture wil be out there then - if you do not want others to steal it, maybe it is not a good idea... but if you have a blog or something you might be able to post it there and get a link. I am not sure.

Gina: please answer your own questions about, I would love to hear your thoughts ^^

Malin

I hope that answers your questions for now, gotta go, I am late!!!

in responce to what Gina said, I find that, more and more, the characters I make up seem to have a will of their own. when I was crafting the aforementioned 7000-year history, I found that the 'average citizen' of each kingdom in the area developed their own personaliity that I didn't plan for them to have. So, no, I'm not really in charge of my characters, although being the author, I can naturally make them do my will!

Now Malin, did you want to give me some words that describe your world, and I'll see if I can come up with a name for it? And may I also remind you that you were going to send me that thing about traditional Swedish music?

okay, well seeing as Anxious was the only one to answer my question of which character to post information about, here is a profile of Andvari the Dwarf (ps I didn't make this character up, he is from the Volsunga Saga)

Name: Anvari (or Alberich in German. this character evolved over time and finally became Oberon, from Shakespeare's A Midsummernight's Dream. the original character was, of course, much more sinister)

Age: Unknown, but it would be measured in not years, but millenia.

Hair: Black and matted

Eye colour: I like to think it was red...and glowing!

Family: Unknown

Comes from: Most likely Nidavellir, the world of the Dwarves in Norse Mythology, but had somehow found his way into Midgard, the world of Humans, well before the story's beginning

Special abilities: Presumably a master smith, like most Dwarves, he also has the power to curse certain objects (the most notable, and only known such object being the infamous ring of the Volsunga Saga)

Background: like Malin, I can't really say much here, as it gives away the story, but researching Norse Mythology should provide you with some information.

Okay, Malin, as long as it was me who told you. I would hate to think that someone is stalking me from the other side of the world!
wow. it's so strange hearing that the name of where you live sounds otherwordly. just for that, I might use Föllinge in one of my stories! haha! Razzer

I suppose I could post a map up. it may not happen for a few days, though, I'm not sure when I'm going into the larger library about 15 minutes drive from where I live. (the USB port at the computer at the small local library is inacessible) by the way, how do you post up a picture on this message board? you'll have to give me instructions, Malin...I have no idea!

I'd love to reply to more of what's been said since I was last on this post, but I unfortunately have to go now.

BIG HUG!
Luv Jesse Cool

My story was Loreena induced. I'd listen and images would pop in my mind and if I wanted my mind back (usually I didn't want it back) I would have to write down what was playing in my head.
Here is an example of what came to mind while listening to Loreena. I can't seem to place which cd I was listening to but it was before LiPaT. It's just a little poem written by a young Cheyenne Rivers (before she was Cheyenne), she was a sad, depressed, unloved little girl and she was searching for someone to love her and she was asking the stars for help:
I called out for your love
To the stars I demand
Every night right before I close my eyes
I will follow the stars command*
I need your love to replace my sorrow
To touch you is pure beauty it seems
Nestled in the depths of tomorrow
To wake to find you are only a dream
*clouds permitting

Now I remember!!! Before I read the liner notes I thought Loreena sang (The Mystic's Dream) "Nestled in the depths of tomorrow" instead of "Nestled in the emarld moss". Big difference. I had to write the poem to show how much love didn't flow inside her heart and how troubled she once was. Besides she only wrote it once and didn't bother to smooth it out.

"May the Bard be with you"*,

Haha, I can not remember when or where, but you have told me. Or I think you told me first and then I thought it sounded nice and said that I would use it in my story. And it sounds so great. Tasmania. Otherworldly.

Yes...this world is were the mirror guardians palace is located, but also the Demons' gate (the scary place, so to say). This is were you find, unlike in the Untouched world (that could be compared to our world) magical creatures (but that does not include trolls and fairies, sirens, or other beings that are represented in Swedish folklore Wink). If they are found in the Untouched world, you can blame it on the politicians.

Funny.... I started reading Viktor Hugo's Hunchback of Notre Dame... and I found that some guy, a general or something, was named Mignon. I studied French for some years and I just grabbed something out from the air when I needed a name for Lisbetha. X)

Good to know that you are a wordsmith! I could use that. I love making up names for persons, but not for places. Do you draw maps?? If you could post a picture of it I would love to see it! Big Grin

One in particular features a large empire called The Seven Kingdoms of Arvaica. there are many towns and cities dotted all over its map, and I had to come up with SO many names for each of them (although my mother and sister helped a bit with those). I guess you could say I'm a bit of a word-smith, but I can't really rattle names off the top of my head. Malin, if you give me a word that describes your "second world," I'll put it through the process I use to come up with names, and see what comes out.

I suppose I'll put up a character description as well. Only thing is that I can't decide which one! here are the main characters so far:

Evil dwarf-stunted creature (sneak peak: his name is Andvari, which will probably ring a BIG bell with those of you into Norse Mythology)

Sigvard (the young Earl)

Mysterious hooded stranger from far away (for now called Finn, but I still need a better name...something more mysterious. Any ideas? He is from Ireland)

let me know who you want to hear about.

Oh, and Happy New Year!

Luv Jesse

PS: Malin, how did you find out I was from Tasmania? I don't remember posting that fact!

PPS: great picture, Malin!
