Since there has been some buzz around non-english posts, i'd like to give a "happy end" (or start) to this...
I would like you to send words of your language that you think have a beautiful sound and feel like there couldn't be a better word for what they stand for.
My native language is greek and i love the word "likno" (λίκνο) that means cradle. It comes from the verb liknizo (λικνίζω) standing for "rock", or move something gently to and fro'...
Waiting for yours guys!

"Madam" comes from the French "madame", which means... well, madam, haha.

We don't use that in Spanish, though, we say "señora" just like in Italian! =)

"Zzzzzzzzzzzz" is the same, though, hee hee.

I like the word morena (moh-reh-nuh), which means dark-skinned girl in Spanish (my native language).

Hello everybody,

this is a wonderful idea.
I´ve just wondered about the German word Blütenblatt, which sounds so silky and soft and means petal.
In general I like onomatopoetic words (words that try to imitate a sound like e.g. Cuckoo)
Greetings Christina

Hello Anna and everybody else!
This is a very good and interesting topic!!!
My word is the Greek word "Filomatheia" (Φιλομάθεια).
("Filo=friend=φίλος and "Matheia"=learning=μαθαίνω).
It means "the desire to learn new things"!

Hi Malin

You are right. this is getting a little off the subject.

WoW is short for World of Warcraft. It is an on-line game. You fight some creatures in the game. You can also fight other players, and make guilds (groups) with the players that are on the same side as you.

I guess the creators of WoW maust have been reading the same books as you!

Thank you for the help on finding favourite words.
I will have to think a little more...

Or maybe I'm thinking too much! Big Grin

No, I don't even know what WoW is. Is that a video game? Roll Eyes I read fantasy books written by a Swedish author, Niklas Krog, and there, wyverns are transportation and often close friends to the soldiers. They can talk and are intelligent. They switch colours with their age until they become white.

This was a little off-subject, sorry about that.

When looking for favourite words...think about things that you like, a hobby or something. What makes life a wee little better. Like, mamma. (mother) Wink G-klav, sextondelsnot, glissendo...

Hello! It is great to read your beautiful words! Anxious 2, since I live not to far away from your country I recognize most of your words. However, I love the way Danish say 'kaka'. Like, kääge. Wink We have something similar to your "der var engang..." We say:
Det var en gång, och den var grusad! Once upon a time, and it was gritted! (Not sure how to "bend" the verb grit, haha).

Jokes that are linked to the language is a problem when it comes to translate movies, you know...

Since I enjoy the fantasy genre, both reading and writing myself, I have come to like some special words... and I have many favourite words too. Here are some:

sw Svärdsång - sword song
sw Krigare - warrior
eng Dark angel - mörkängel, ikar
sw Stupränna - rain gutter Big Grin
sw vingklippt - "to clip sb's wings"
eng Highwayman - stråtrövare
sw Oåterkallelig - irrevocable
sw Wyvern - well, a flying fantasy creature.

sw Blodränna - can't find the English word. On a sword, to make it lighter, in the middle of the flat blade they sort of took away some of the material. That is called blodränna, because the blood could...take that way...

OSV OSV (och så vidare = and so on)
I could probably go on for an eternity, I also love french...let's stop here for today.. X)

I love latin to, and that reminds me of when I watched Mel Brook's film about the world's history. And they use the old latin phrase "Ave Caesar, morituri tes salutant" in a fun way, something like:
"Hi Caesar, we who are supposed to die salute you".
...
Oh, and Gina! That's something we have in common! McKennitt, McKennitt, McKennitt! Smiler

"Acta est fabula, plaudite!"

Spanish is my second language and I would have to say that Te amo is special to me. Translates into english as I love you. Also, the word corazon, means the heart, just sounds special and romantic.

"Embrace" comes very close .. Embrace .. to hold closely. . to accept . .to show affection with a hug.

A phrase comes to mind. . Ihave not heard it in 25 years. . it is form a Japanese song I used to sing with my then wife.

Kimini, kimini, koano, madu mo oigageh, ya kah geh kimini watari, atomah oik-asuh. Yah gah geh, kibiki, watari, otomah oikaseh. . roh chi deh matsu kubi subah ru. .

It's a refrain from a song, a woman singing of her unrequited love for a man she may never have. The spellig is close, if not entirely correct, but you can get the gist of the sounds of the lyrics.
