Before I heard Loreena's music I used to say that I listened to "everything and nothing". Then I found my musical home, but of course some things remain.

The Swedish outtake for the Eurovision song contest has produced a lot of crazy, horrible, absolutely great and unforgettable songs. Sometimes I take the dvd "Melodifestivalen 50 år" (50 years of the Melody festival) with all those classics and watch and listen to it for hours.

Ted Gärdestad - swedish 70's singer. Passed away in 1997. Listen to him when I feel a little down or sad. A mix of happy, carefree pop and deep serious thoughts upon life.

Gregorian Chants - bought the cd at a second hand for approx. half a dollar. I felt a little inspired by Loreena when she used chants in some of her songs. Sounds great, but I only listen to it when I write.

Roger Pontare - another Swede, who has adapted the "old sound" with epic lyrics.

The Chieftains - such merry music! I love to play it in the background. It creates a warm atmosphere. Love living music.

Nordman - a special guy...Swede... he uses the Swedish folklore for his songs and combines the folk-sound, with the nyckelharps and such, with modern pop/rock.

To often I stumble upon singers or bands that made one or two good songs, and then nothing more (this is in my oppinion, of course). Here are some:

Bonnie Tyler
Lizette Pålsson
The Clannads
Abba ( Cool)
The Proclaimers
Rufus Wainwright
Carola (häggkvist)
Tenacious D Big Grin
+ many more Swedish singers, and general folk (from Great Britain) and world music.

And so on, and so on... I'll think of a thousand more when I get away form the computer... Haha..

Good night!
Malin

Hi Maria Smiler
How nice to see you on the board again!
I have noticed we have similar music tastes, my favourites also are: of course Loreena M. at first place and Pink Floyd, Dire Straits , REM. I would also add my Polish favourite: Marek Grechuta. He performed in public from 70s to 90s. Lyrics is very important part of
his songs. The text, the music and his interpretation create the masterpiece You can find some of his songs in Youtube:

I wonder, if you like such kind of music.
Kindest regards

Heart
Led Zepplin
Tina Turner

I, on the other hand, have a narrow selection. Besides Ms. McKennitt's music, I have a little bit of Yanni and practically all Enya. Ha, ha.

I have found that as I age...my tastes in music have expanded...I like all kinds of music. Usually it is the actual music that I listen to first...then the vocals. I find extraordinary music amongst all types of music...I think it is the layering of different sounds, instruments and voices. It's simply amazing, and it gives me chills when somebody composes such music.
Anyway...here are some of the artists/bands to whom I listen.
Various Windham Hill Artists eg."Snuffy" Walden
Clanaad
Enya
Dire Straits
David Arkenstone
Pink Floyd - love them!
Nickleback
REM
U2
Altan
The Chieftains
ColdPlay
Limp Bizkit
The Cranberries
Celtic Women
Anuna
Just to name a few! Don't get me started on my "oldies!" (1940s to 1970s)

- John

Very interesting! I think we'll be finding a lot of coincidences:

Orla Fallon (she's made a wonderful album of traditional Irish songs)
Andreja Malir
Barbra Streisand (do you know her?)
Michael Bolton
Nightwish
Eduardo Paniagua
Maria del Mar Bonet (famous Catalan female singer with many different Mediterranean influences...)
Shania Twain (she gives a simple positive message with lots of innocence and love, something that I think we need nowadays, just another Canadian treaure!)
Cher
Sarah Brightman
Def Leppard
Culture Club (their music always makes me feel happy)
Mariza (beautiful fados...)
world and traditional music in general
...
