If Loreena McKennitt met Enya...

I have a question for you people on this forum. Now I would like your honest opinion about it and I appreciate some insight and input on this. Here's the question:

What would happen if Loreena met Enya?

(NOTE: Enya is a Irish composer and vocalist with a reputation for multi-layering of vocals and is one of Loreena's comtemporaries.)

For those of you who are new to the QR community:

You folks are on the right track. I think some of you know better than those who have been on this messageboard for a long time. I agree with deborah and with greenfaerie. Of course, I did not intend this post as a means for saying who is better than the other. As a matter of fact, I do like Loreena and Enya both and this I combined both ladies' names when I joined the community. Thus it is "Loreenya". I trust that these two female musicians can work together peacefully and with their wonderful talents, they can bring an end to terrorism, war and violence we are experiencing in our world today. They will help us build the rainbow we all want to see. Smiler

That would be like Dark Chocolate meeting White Chocolate. Smiler

I think Loreena has a lot more depth in her music and is like living a memory where Enya is a little lighter and more from a distance. They have the same quality in their songs, like melancholy, so there would be a lot of potential I think! I would see Loreena coming up with the chords (and drums etc...) and Enya coming up with vocals and light harmonies. Together they'd be magical.

That would be very nice for a movie or something.

Hi there! After reading many replies about who´s the best of the best between Enya and Loreena I think that both have their fans. I love both, and their music is there when I´m feeling more "Loreena" or more "Enya" mood. Both are excellent artists. My imagination begins to flow after I put the CD.Their voices are completely different as well as their music style.I love Enya because I started to look for more information about the Celts and Ireland´s history, but I started to love more Shakespeare´s and St. John of the Cross´s (San Juan de la Cruz in Spanish)literature after listening to Loreena´s music. So I´m grateful because of both. Life is diversity and I can´t compare between blessings. Thank God because of Enya and Loreena!

I'm sure if you asked Enya fans about this rivalry, they would say just the opposite of your opinion dear Desiree: they see Enya as a more talented musician, they feel there's more emotional depth in her music, and they think her artistic power is stronger than Loreena's. And these fans would give you dozens of facts that prove the truth of their statement. But excuse me, what's the use of this childish competition? In my opinion the best thing we can do is to listen and explore both music, and should be thankful for both of them.
About the original topic: What do you all think, haven't they really met before?

I think together they would create some amazing music if that was their goal.

I feel that Enya would be awed by Loreena and have an enormous respect and admiration, and I believe it would be Loreena to be a mentor type of model to Enya. They both come from the very heart of their artistry and I think Enya may have had the struggles of a fledgling artist whereas Loreena had not a care for the almighty dollar or chasing the gold, for she was rich in her tremendous view of the world and its offerings to her. She will always find a way with her artistry, sense of world and talent. Not that Enya is not proficient in her craft and desire to share her message. I just feel she is somewhat pedestrian in the vein of worldly musicianship and Loreena would have much to offer with love of course.

It's impossible to describe all the beauty that can be found in her compositions, and I haven't heard anybody who could express heavenly serenity, innocence, sweet melancholy, and pure love such perfectly. (I think Christians the ones who can really understand these emotions and rejoice in them with all their hearts.) Listen carefully and you could see that her works are extremely deliberated and artistically perfect in respect of instrumentation and vocals as well. Anyone who consider this question detachedly could say that there are specialities in which one of them is slightly better than the other, but their talent is indistinguishable.

God bless you!

Uh, Spartanhun, is the "she" refering to in your post Enya?

Yes! Wasn't that obvious? Oh, sorry for that. By the way, I love the idea about the meeting, Loreenya.

God bless you all!

Totally unrelated to any of these posts, but on my favorite Clannad album Enya only does vocals on two songs - and they aren't that impressive (Think "More Fool Me" by Phil Collins on "Selling England by the Pound"). Like Michael Jackson leaving the 5 to go onto fame, Enya hit the mark (pardon the pun) with Watermark. It's a great album to take your Christmas tree down to (try it in 11 months). Clannad, meanwhile, went through a Sex Pistols phase with songs re-appearing on a few of their albums. Clannad nailed it on more popular songs like Poison Well and In a Lifetime but traditional covers were better done by Capercaille and Altan.

Anyway, I would like to think that both women are aware of and acknowledge each other contributions to the canon and might acknowledge each other in passing with a nod, a smile and perhaps even a "wassup?"

I think Loreena and Enya would be very understanding about where the other person is coming from and respect each other's differeces. But I agree with Mask and Mirror I think if Loreena and Enya did a duet Loreena's would overpower Enya's.

yep...i think enya has got something in common with pop music and new age..i mean..her music is much more easy listening than loreena's,very soothing and "celestial";it calms you down.
Loreena's is more complex,structured,eclectic.
Maybe Loreena is more academical and, sometimes,i find her music difficult, too perfect at first hearing..but as you get in touch with her sounds and her strong way of singing-so different from enya's -you finally remain touched and moved;indeed, her lyrics are based upon much more deep rooted feelings than enya's..she deals with important issues-history,soul,traditions-but,on the other way, enya's music grabs my attention every time i listen to her, heavenly mood if i can say that.
So,i can't do without the both of them Smiler

I'm not really sure what would happen if they were to bump into each other. I'm sure they are already well aware of each other and their music. Maybe they'd share a laugh. Enya might say, "You know, Loreena, people keep thinking your songs are mine! And I wish they were!" But I'm sure there'd be a bond, as fellow women musicians with Celtic roots. I suppose they might talk a little shop with each other. I don't think they'd necessarily collaborate on a piece, that's something Enya rarely does. It would be interesting if they would cover one of each other's songs.

Malin, how did you know that my name is Natalie? I have all of Enya's albums. I recommend you listening to Enya's "Only Time" and "Pilgrim", which are both from the album "A Day Without Rain". "Amarantine" is another decent song, because it's about love being unconditional and everlasting. In response to your question, Enya writes all the music and does all the vocals to her all songs, but has somebody writes the words for her. If you look at the interviews by Enya, Malin, Enya is very soft-spoken and also humble. As Enya have said many times, it is the music that is important rather than success. If you have any questions regarding Enya, feel free ask me.

To begin with: I'm your stalker, haven't you vere seen me outside your window? Nah XD I just so happened to stumble by your "Hello" post in the íntroduce-youself-section and saw your name there. I will have a listen to Enya Smiler

But hey, the Clannads...isn't that Moya Brennan's band? Roll Eyes I didn't know Enya is a Brennan. Are there many Brennans, or what? X) I took a listen to a Clannads album, and the only song that really hit me was "No matter where you go".

Speaking of Enya makes me remember when I watched the extra material for lotr and saw her music video. It was some years ago, long before I discovered LMK, and I clearly remember thinking that the lady had an extraordinary charisma, and her face seemed so...(damn my bad English...) queer, but in a nice way. About the same surprise came over me some years after that, seeing Loreenas face for the first time, and I think that on some persons you can see that there's something special.
Or I might be out sailing (is that an expression in English? XD "Completely on the wrong way").

Your question about what would happen if they met is a one that I have been thinking of for a long time now. Your little scenario makes me smile, it's really nice. I could almost imagine that happen, although they would probably recognize each other, wouldn't they? Smiler I'll keep thinking, and I will find out more about Enya before I make any "professional" guessings X)

//Malin (pronounced with the "a" as in "car" and "i" as in "see". Just for y'all to know X´D)

As for the rest of you who still do not comprehend, here's the scenario I created in relevance to my question:

"Loreena is having a quiet dinner at a fine restaurant in Toronto. There's live music with some guy in a tuxedo playing the piano. Meanwhile, Enya is doing a promotion for a new album there. So, this little Irish lady walks in the same place for a bite to eat. But Enya decides she'd like to play the piano. So, she taps the guy and says 'Excuse me, sir. May I give it a try?' So, Enya plays the piano and Loreena listens. When Enya finishes playing, Loreena walks up and says,
'Gosh, miss, that is awesome. I never heard such beautiful music'
'Thank you' Enya replies, beaming. 'That's one of my compositions.'
Loreena:'What's your name, Miss?'
Enya: 'Enya. Enya Patricia Brennan. Everybody calls me Enya.'
Loreena:'Well, Enya, nice to meet you. I'm Loreena McKennitt.'
Then they shake hands and talk some more."

That's interesting.
