This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first engine-powered flight in Canada and Loreena will be joining the celebrations and performing at a special concert in Wagmatcook, Nova Scotia on February 21, 2009.
"It’s an honour to be part of this incredible event," says Loreena, who is also Honorary Colonel of Canadian Air Force 435 Transport & Rescue Squadron out of Winnipeg. "This is a milestone in our country’s history and I'm thrilled to be joining other Canadian performers to pay tribute to the courageous people who pursued this dream 100 years ago."
The Silver Dart was the name of the aircraft that took off for its inaugural flight over Baddeck, Nova Scotia on February 23, 1909. It was part of an experiment backed by world-renowned inventor Alexander Graham Bell and other like-minded visionaries, including his wife Mabel Bell, who financially supported the venture.
The February 21 concert, called the Mabel Bell Musical Celebration, begins at 7 p.m. AST, and is part of Nova Scotia’s Silver Dart Centennial Celebrations.
Loreena will perform several songs with musical colleague Brian Hughes and there will also be appearances by PEI singer Catherine MacLellan, Cape Breton fiddler Jennifer Roland, as well as greetings from Canada’s first female astronaut, Dr. Roberta Bondar. The evening will be hosted by CBC Radio One personality Wendy Bergfeldt.
Tickets for the event are $40 and available by calling 902-295-2009.
In addition to the Mabel Bell Musical Celebration, Loreena will also sing the national anthem on Monday February 23rd, at The Silver Dart Centennial Flypast before Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada.

I have read, on another site, something posted by a person who attended the concert, and he/she? says that one song performed by Loreena was Between The Shadows....but nothing about the others. Bye bye.
In un altro sito qualcuno che ha partecipato al concerto ha scritto che Loreena ha cantato, tra le varie canzoni, Between The Shadows, ma poi non ha detto nient'altro riguardo alle altre. Ciao.

Hi Freesoul. As you note, the Governor General was not able to attend the official anniversary ceremonies. The weather turned very bad overnight from Sunday to Monday. I didn't catch her speech from Ottawa.
Loreena did not sing the national anthem, but did recite a verse from Come By The Hills, to conclude the ceremonies on Monday.
Hi, if I didn't read bad, on Feb 23rd Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada was not able to take part to the ceremony in Nova Scotia because of bad weather conditions which didn't allow her to land. So she gave her speech from Ottawa, Ontario. But did Loreena sing however? And in Nova Scotia, as per schedule? Thanks.

For anyone interested in airplanes, there is another story involving Canadian aviation and that is of the Avro Arrow. The Arrow was an aircraft far in advance of it's time designed and built by Avro Canada, the result of visionary engineering and the determination of one man, Crawford Gordon. The Arrow story is full of inspiration, heartbreak, intrigue and in the end, even mythology. There is a fairly obscure but very well made movie about the Arrow story starring Dan Akroyd as Gordon. It is well worth watching.
