Well, there really just aren't words to accurately describe the magic of the night, but bear with me as try to recount my experiences at the concert in Knoxville.
The Tennessee Theatre from what I understand has recently undergone massive renovations, and it is beautiful. Bright colors, detailed ornamentation, to me it really gave out an eastern vibe...Even Loreena commented on its beauty.
The stage was set with a metal archway with intricate "celtic-esque" designs. 4 similarly designed large candles votive thingies..(I know I’m doing horrible with this description) were hung along the stage with a sheer curtain with beautiful designs as the backdrop. The lighting was handled marvelously, kudos to all those involved.
Set List
She Moved Through the Fair The Gates of Istanbul The Mummer’s Dance Bonny Portmore Marco Polo The Highwayman Dante’s Prayer The Bonny Swans Caravanserai
--Intermission--
Raglan Road The Mystic’s Dream Santiago The Lady of Shalott The Old Ways Never Ending Road
Encore Songs: Huron ‘Beltane’ Fire Dance Penelope’s Song
I come from a small town, so I was a little agitated, nervous, and tired by the time we got to Knoxville, but once we entered the venue and took our seats, everything seemed to slow down.
The first song, “She Moved Through the Fair” began with all lights out, except on Stratis Psaradellis playing the Greek Lute or maybe it was the Lyra..I’m not to sure and then a light hit Loreena as she played the harp, it was a magical opening.
Each song evoked waves of cheering, “I love you Loreenas,” and clapping from the audience. The music was amazing; all of the musicians were at the top of their game. Brian Hughes and Hugh Marsh were stupendous in Santiago. Hugh Marsh was on fire as he passionately played, Loreena joked about getting him lessons as he was cheered on and applauded for his talent.
As we walked back to our vehicle we saw 3 buses sitting in the alleyway beside the theatre and a few people standing down next the side door, so of course I just had to find out why…they were waiting on Loreena! So we waited, and it was little nippy, but the excitement of the night overshadowed everything else. Tal Bergman, who plays drums and percussion, came out first to loud cheers and clapping (I think he is just adorable).
And then after a few false alarms with others, mostly people who had been in the after party, which I don’t really know what that means, but am certainly jealous all the same, Loreena emerged!
It was marvelous; I faintly recall when it was actually my turn to say Hello. I do know I had been mentally rehearsing what to say, but what words can be found to express how much one admires and appreciates Loreena and her work…so I basically said something like: “It’s a pleasure to meet you! And after that it’s a little blurry hehe.. I was coherent enough to ask her to sign my ticket which she did smiling.
It was a dream-come-true night!

As a matter of fact, right before the encore, I was thinking how I would love to hear "All Soul's Night" and "Penelope's Song." Thankfully, we got the latter, and it was amazing.
Yes, if I could've added one more song to the set-list, it would've been "All Soul's Night," as it's always been one of my favorites. Although, I know we received something magical in return. In comparison to "Nights From The Alhambra," I suppose it was "The Highwayman" or "The Gates Of Istanbul."
I do wish we could've spoken as well, as it seems we were in sync on quite a bit. It would've been really nice to meet you guys in person. Take care, Jason
Two things I sort of regret, not talking to as many people at the concert as I wish I had, it would have been fun to say hello in person to both Musicmaker, MacNucator, and all those who were there (I'm glad you both had a great time too!)
...and I kinda sorta wanted to hear "All Soul's Night" performed live, I dunno I just thought it would be fitting to hear during the Fall. But there's always the "Repeat" option in the car or on the computer.
Dan, have a safe trip to the venue on Tuesday, and I have no doubts the concert will be fabulous!
Sweet Dreams all,
Jenn

thanks for the review! it was nice to live it over in my mind. its so sureal to me still. i just can't believe i saw her...in knoxville of all places. haha and met her after the show. oh and thanks for the set list. i just surprised my dad with tickets for friday in baltimore. i didn't know she was coming till i looked on my tour t-shirt. i was so glad cause i really wanted him to see the show with me. now at least he'll get too. thanks again!
Hi Jenn, that was a wonderful review of the show. I guess it wasn't a dream after all....
I myself drove up from central AL, about a 5 hour drive, so I know how you felt on that score. But as you say in so many words, it was worth that and more.
I've been listening to Loreena's music since the mid-nineties and just couldn't pass up this opportunity to see her live. I have to say though, I wasn't really expecting to get to meet her, so that was a pleasant surprise.
I completely relate with your feelings on meeting her. What can you possibly say in 30 seconds to relay what she and her music has meant to you? Well, you probably end up saying things you didn't exactly mean, and forgetting all the things you wanted to say....LOL.
But oddly enough, I think these actions speak louder than words, and Loreena understands perfectly. I mean, if you didn't really care, then it wouldn't be such a big deal, right?
“A dream come true night“ states it perfectly. When I was standing outside, I was thinking to myself…”a Loreena McKennitt show…..in the Fall of the year….in October…..wow.” Does it get any better than that?
Anyhow, just wanted to say hi and that I really enjoyed your review. Best wishes.
